How To Guide How To: Top Tips on Making Money from Your Vacation Rental in Mexico by Brent May May 8, 2024 written by Brent May Whether you already own your vacation home in Mexico or are thinking about investing in a vacation rental as part of your real estate portfolio, you might be wondering if you can actually make money off of your rental. Here, we will explore the idea of making money in real estate from a vacation property rental and provide you with our top tips on how to make money from your vacation rental. So, can you make money? With visitor numbers exploding in Mexico during and as a result of the pandemic, Mexico has become a home away from home for many people. Yes, you definitely can make money from your vacation property rental. Here are our top tips to be sure your rental makes you money. Hire a property manager. Unless you plan on being present and physically close to your vacation rental and doing all of the work, you should hire a professional and efficient property manager who makes your property their priority. You need feet on the ground and someone available not only in case of emergencies, but to provide guest services. You need a friendly contact for your guests. Bayside Vacations offers property owners in Huatulco property management services at a competitive price. Their goal is to ensure your property maintains its value and stays in tip top condition each season. Bayside is a full-service property management company. They provide not only physical services like pool and interior maintenance but also a full menu of services like utility and tax service payments, HOA management, and monthly accounting reports to name just a few. Make sure your cleaning is systemized. Develop a turnover and intermediate cleaning checklist. Follow the checklist or hire a property manager who will manage cleaning for you. But make sure it is systematic. This will make sure your space is always clean and that your guests are satisfied. Identify your ideal guest. By identifying your ideal guest, you will define how you want to work. Do you want to provide long or short-term rentals? Do you want to only provide short stays at high daily rates? You can do that but be prepared to work hard with frequent turnovers. Do your market research or hire a marketing consultant to assist you. What are your benchmarks? What are other rentals of similar characteristics going for in your area? Set your pricing according to your market and according to your operating costs. Be sure to consider platform fees or listing costs, commissions, cleaning service, turnover fees, maintenance, and taxes as part of your operating costs and anything else particular to your property. Use multiple platforms for promotion. You can choose to list your vacation property with your local vacation rental agency like Bayside Vacations and on different online platforms like VRBO, Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia, etc. Do your research. Check their reputations and user reviews. Talk to other owners about their experience. Check the advantages and disadvantages of each for your property. Check any listing fees and mandatory policies. If you are just beginning, it is a good idea to list with one or two agencies and see how they work. When you work with a local agency, you will be able to talk with a real live person! Some of the online platforms do not even have customer service phone numbers these days. Look at how they solve owner issues before you sign up with them. When you feel comfortable managing these agencies, then add another. Just don’t bite off too much at the beginning if you are managing your rental reservations yourself. Or let your local agency handle your reservations. They’re experienced, have built up a reputation over years and will get reservations because they are already very visible in the vacation rental panorama. Creating a high-quality listing takes time. Think about what makes your vacation property unique. Do your market research. Take the time to write a good listing. Create an eye-catching listing headline or title. On those platforms where you can write your own description, start off with an eye-catching headline that includes the best features of your place and as many features as the space allows. Include emojis if possible. Write an appealing property description. It is key to have a well-written description for your rental. Some platforms let you write the description yourself and others generate a listing based on amenities, services and location. If you are writing your description, list all amenities. Include as many details as possible. More information is always better. Be sure to take advantage of this space to list any services you offer like airport pick-up or grocery stocking. List absolutely any and all extra charges or fees. People will not mind paying for extra charges if they know it is extra from the get-go. No one likes surprise fees, intended or not. Also, if there are any negative aspects about your property, (noise on Saturday nights, for example,) be sure to mention these. Being upfront lets guests know these things and that you are honest. As a final tip in the description, we recommend you always detail what is included or not included: housekeeping, cleaning products/supplies, basic kitchen supplies, etc. If you are using a platform that generates your listing information, be sure to review it when it becomes available. You can request edits. Be sure to suggest the wording you would like following the platform’s style of text. Only use professional photos. One of the most powerful tools you can use is professional photos. They are worth every centavo of what a good professional photographer costs you. They are key to quality listings, key to your website and key to the first step of the guest decision-making process… dreaming! You have to stand out from the crowd in this area if you want to get bookings. Let’s get visible. When you first list, it can take time to get to a cruise speed due to algorithms (the computer programming “rules and requirements” for becoming visible or popular) on the platforms. Your best bet to become more visible and secure more bookings faster on the individual platforms is to use discounts in the beginning. Programming discounts will push your listing to the first spaces on the platform. Secondly, in order to become more visible, you have to get reviews. Guest reviews play an important part in the platforms’ algorithms also. The more reviews you have, the higher you will appear in the search results. Have a QR code for your vacation property on site. Or a printed business card and a printed house guide. Provide your guests with a way to contact you once they have left your property. Then they can pass along your contact information to their friends. This is helpful for guests who reserve through online platforms. Make a Google listing. Having a Google Business listing allows people to find you directly on the Google map and in search results. Potential guests also search for vacation properties outside of the platforms to avoid paying fees. By having a Google listing, you allow people to find you and contact you directly. You can interact with the potential guest and see if they are a good fit for your property. Use your own website for direct bookings. Making a simple website makes you visible for people to find you directly. Your Google listing can reference your website and then people have access to your rental property information. You can list your website on your business cards or any other promotional material you decide to use. You may use a tool to allow reservations directly on your website with an availability calendar or you can just provide your contact information and allow people to contact you directly to discuss a reservation. Be kind. Besides just being a genuinely nice human because it’s the right thing to do, you also want to collect positive guest reviews. Some platforms boost you in search results for having positive guest reviews. Being kind is your very best tool for getting referrals. Word of mouth is your best and cheapest marketing tool. Being nice gets you repeat guests and they will likely talk with their friends about their vacation. When their friends are interested in visiting, they will ask where they stayed. Declare your taxes at the SAT. If you do not have a RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes or a tax ID number), and do not directly declare your taxes to the SAT (Servicio de Administración Tributaria or the tax administration service), the platforms will take out taxes on your behalf. The advantage to declaring your own taxes, and we suggest you hire an accountant to assist you, is that you can deduct almost everything that is related to your activity. This is much more advantageous than letting the platforms collect taxes on your behalf. Have a crystal-clear cancellation policy. The platforms allow you to choose among different cancellation policies and some allow you to define a custom policy. We know people’s plans change and travel can be uncertain. But also, you want to be sure to rent your space. So, find a cancellation policy that allows some flexibility but at the same time protects you in case of cancellation. Because of the constantly changing travel and health situations, flexible cancellation policies will definitely get you the most reservations. You are also free to work with your guests according to their situation. Compromises are easy to find and being kind when people are in a bind is really the best option. If you have your own website or take direct bookings, be sure in any and all correspondence to state the cancellation policy both in the correspondence, in payment information and any rental contracts. Stick to your guns. You put a lot of time and care into managing and maintaining your property. Be nice but firm in the reservation process. Provide what you can for guests who make special requests, but not beyond what you are comfortable providing. Some platforms provide reviews of guests. If you are not comfortable with a booking, don’t be afraid to refuse it. Some platforms may penalize you for this, but your peace of mind is the most important. Also, be sure to check if there are penalties involved in canceling a booking. Making money from your rental property can be very profitable. This is especially true if you are a great host or hire a stellar property manager. You want happy guests. Happy guests attract more happy guests. The nuts and bolts of property management and maintenance is a baseline service. Ultimately, knowing how to make money from your rental property is about providing exceptional customer service, being honest about what you offer, and making sure your guests have an excellent online and in-person rental experience. In a tropical climate near the ocean, xeriscape landscaping offers a practical and visually stunning solution. Xeriscape landscaping, also known as xeriscaping, is a gardening philosophy that emphasizes water conservation, low maintenance, and the use of drought-tolerant plants. Understanding Xeriscape Landscaping in Mexico Xeriscape landscaping in Mexico is more than just a practical choice; it’s an opportunity to embrace the unique beauty of the region’s native flora. By selecting plants that are adapted to the local climate, you can create a landscape that thrives with minimal water and maintenance. This not only conserves precious resources but also allows you to enjoy the natural splendor of Mexico’s diverse plant life. Xeriscaping principles include planning your garden around your home, drive, sidewalks or other features, clustering plants in different zones in your garden to bring together those with the same light and water needs, using ground cover like mulch or gravel, improving soil quality by adding more organic material to improve water retention, and efficient irrigation either by hand or with a drip sprinkler system. Xeriscape Landscaping in Mexico: A Gallery of Stunning Plants One of the most captivating aspects of xeriscape landscaping in Mexico is the array of fascinating plants you can incorporate into your garden. From slow-growing cacti to vibrant succulents, each plant offers a unique charm and breathtaking beauty. Here are some of the stunning plants that can bring your xeriscape garden to life: – Agave: These striking succulents come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with some species producing impressive spikes of flowers. – Cacti: Mexico is home to a wealth of cacti species, ranging from the iconic saguaro to the delicate pincushion cactus. Watching these slow-growing plants evolve and bloom is a true delight. Some popular cacti for coastal areas include the organ pipe cactus (Stenocereus thurberi), Mexican fence post cactus (Pachycereus marginatus), the Old Man of Mexico cactus (Cephalocereus senilis), and the biznaga (Echinocactus grusonii). – Yucca: With their distinctive sword-like leaves and towering flower stalks, yuccas add a striking architectural element to any xeriscape garden. – Bougainvillea: These colorful, drought-tolerant plants are a staple in Mexican landscapes, offering a vibrant burst of color with minimal water needs. The biznaga, also known as the golden barrel cactus, is a truly captivating specimen. Its round, ribbed body can grow up to 3 feet tall and is covered in golden spines, making it a striking focal point in any xeriscape design. Despite its formidable appearance, the biznaga produces beautiful yellow flowers when it blooms. Advantages of Xeriscape Landscaping in Mexico Water Conservation and Low Maintenance In regions with limited water resources, xeriscape landscaping in Mexico offers a sustainable solution. How To GuideOaxaca Coast Infrastructure Traveling the Super Highway Barranca Larga-Ventanilla: Oaxaca City to the Oaxaca Coast by Brent May April 24, 2024 written by Brent May A New Scenic Journey: The Barranca Larga-Ventanilla Highway We’re excited to announce that the long-awaited Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway, connecting Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca City, is now open! This 104.3-kilometer transformative infrastructure project, inaugurated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on February 4th, reduces travel time from more than six and a half hours to just two and a half hours. The promise of swift travel from the Pacific coast to the heart of Oaxaca is now a reality. Paving the way for exciting possibilities along the Oaxacan coast, the coastal region stands poised for growth and prosperity This milestone is not just a convenience for travelers; it’s a game-changer for residents of the Oaxaca coast. Reduced travel time from over six and a half hours to just two and a half hours opens up possibilities for increased connectivity and accessibility. For real estate investors eyeing the Oaxaca coast, this development of improved transportation infrastructure enhances the region’s appeal impacting property value and investment opportunities. The allure of pristine beaches and affordable beachfront living becomes more accessible, making the Oaxaca coast an even more attractive prospect for those considering buying real estate. Infrastructure Marvels and Breathtaking Landscapes The newly opened highway features an impressive array of infrastructure, including 10 bridges, three viaducts, three tunnels, and 15 interchanges. Travelers can now experience the incredible scenery of pine forests, deep valleys, and emerald mountains as they traverse this modern highway. The Journey: A Snapshot Beginning in Puerto Escondido, the drive now takes approximately two hours to reach San Martin de los Cansecos, a small village with roadside stands and amenities. From there, it’s a 45-minute journey to the center of Oaxaca City. The highway offers a speed limit of 110 km in most mountain sections, with wide shoulders and passing lanes for various travelers, including cyclists. Practical Considerations and Work in Progress While the highway is operational, ongoing work involves off ramps, safety barriers, and retaining walls. Some sections may experience limited cell phone service, particularly in mountainous areas. Travelers should anticipate fog and rain due to the region’s altitude. Inauguration and Technical Details Inaugurated with an investment exceeding 13 billion pesos, the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway signifies a long-awaited step in enhancing connectivity. Acknowledging the unfinished nature of some sections, officials assured at the inauguration ceremony that the road will be fully operational in the second half of the year. Toll charges are expected for visitors and cargo transport, with Oaxacans exempted until the end of the President’s current term. Alternative Routes and Transportation Options Beyond the new Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway, there are alternative ways to travel between Oaxaca City and the Oaxaca coast: Highway 175: A 6.5-hour journey through the Sierra Madre del Sur with winding, steep roads from Pochutla via San José del Pacifico. Vans and Buses: Various ground transportation options connecting the coast to Oaxaca. Formerly using Highway 175, vans now also use the new highway. ADO Buses: ADO buses now travel the new highway route. Buses leave Oaxaca at 9:15, 11:15, 13:15, 20:15 and 21:15. A route from Oaxaca to Salina Cruz on to Huatulco and Puerto Escondido exists. Aerotucán: An air travel option connecting Oaxaca City to Huatulco and Puerto Escondido. A New Chapter in Connectivity The opening of the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway marks a new chapter in connectivity between Puerto Escondido and Oaxaca City. This new accessibility adds an exciting dimension for real estate investors. With reduced travel times and improved infrastructure, the Oaxaca coast becomes an increasingly attractive prospect, inviting investors to seize the opportunity and be part of the region’s growth. How To GuideInvesting in Mexico How to Invest in Mexican Real Estate: A Smarter Choice Than Stocks, Bonds, and Savings by Brent May April 17, 2024 written by Brent May Mexico has emerged as a premier destination for savvy real estate investors, offering stability, growth, and attractive opportunities compared to traditional investment vehicles like stocks, bonds, and savings accounts. With its burgeoning tourism industry, growing economy, and unique cultural allure, Mexico presents a compelling case for diversifying your portfolio with strategic Mexican real estate investments. In this article, we’ll explore four of Mexico’s top emerging real estate markets – Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, Yucatan State, and Mazatlán – highlighting the reasons why investing in Mexican property is a smarter choice than stocks, bonds, and savings. Why Mexican Real Estate Investment is a Better Choice Real estate has long been touted as a reliable path to building wealth, and this rings especially true when it comes to investing in Mexico’s dynamic property markets. Unlike the volatility of stocks and the meager returns of bonds and savings accounts, Mexican real estate offers a unique combination of stability, cash flow, and long-term appreciation potential. One of the key advantages of Mexican real estate investment is its relative stability compared to the stock market. While stocks can fluctuate wildly based on economic conditions, political uncertainty, and investor sentiment, real estate values in Mexico’s emerging markets have demonstrated consistent growth over time. This stability allows investors to weather economic storms with more confidence, knowing that their property holdings are less vulnerable to sudden downturns. Generating Consistent Cash Flow with Mexican Real Estate Investment Moreover, Mexican real estate can provide a steady stream of rental income, something that stocks and bonds simply cannot match. By purchasing a property in a desirable tourist destination or a thriving metropolitan area, investors can generate reliable cash flow from short-term or long-term rentals, diversifying their income sources and reducing their reliance on unpredictable financial markets. The wealth-building power of Mexican real estate also extends beyond rental income. As property values appreciate over time, investors can benefit from significant equity growth, further strengthening their portfolio and laying the foundation for long-term financial security. This equity can be leveraged for future investments or used to fund other financial goals, such as retirement or education. Why Mexican Real Estate Investment Outpaces Stocks, Bonds, and Savings When compared to the minuscule interest rates offered by savings accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs), the returns from Mexican real estate investments become even more compelling. In a low-yield environment, parking your money in a savings account can actually result in a loss of purchasing power due to inflation. Real estate, on the other hand, has the potential to deliver higher returns and preserve the value of your hard-earned savings. Read more about Investing Wisely in Mexico: Exploring Mexico’s Top Emerging Real Estate Markets. Huatulco: An Emerging Gem for Mexican Real Estate Investment Nestled along the sunny Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Huatulco has emerged as one of Mexico’s most captivating real estate destinations. This master-planned destination has stunning beaches, world-class eco-tourism attractions, and a quality infrastructure including potable water systems and acres of green space within town limits. The strong rental demand in Huatulco is a key draw for real estate investors. With its alluring mix of natural beauty, luxury amenities, and cultural experiences, the region attracts a steady flow of tourists, both short-term and long-term, who are seeking high-quality accommodation. How To GuideLiving in Mexico How To Conserve Water in Your Home in Mexico: Practical Tips for Sustainable Living by Andrea Titzer April 10, 2024 written by Andrea Titzer Water scarcity is a global issue affecting nations worldwide, including Mexico. Conserving water has become a critical necessity everywhere. Whether you’re a long-time resident or new to living in Mexico, adopting water-saving habits in your home can make a real difference in preserving this precious natural resource. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore practical strategies tailored to Mexican households to address water conservation and to promote sustainable water use. Understanding Mexico’s Water Systems Mexico relies heavily on aquifers, rivers, and reservoirs to meet its water needs. Surface water sources, such as rivers and lakes, provide a substantial portion of Mexico’s freshwater supply supporting agriculture, industry, and urban centers. Mexico is one of the world’s top users of groundwater, with aquifers serving as a vital water source for agriculture, drinking water, and industrial processes. Mexico’s water infrastructure includes dams, reservoirs, and treatment plants designed to capture, store, and distribute water. CONAGUA La Comisión Nacional del Agua or the National Water Commission is a decentralized administrative agency of the SEMARNAT, la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales or the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, created in 1989, whose responsibility is to manage, regulate, control and protect Mexico’s national waters. Individuals do not often come into contact with CONAGUA. Communities and municipalities often work with the agency for permits. Local Water Infrastructure Agencies As an individual or homeowner, you will be in contact with the agency that maintains the local water infrastructure. For example, FONATUR in Huatulco, Administración de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado in Puerto Escondido or Junta Municipal de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado in Mazatlán. You can find out who is in charge of the water infrastructure in your town with a quick internet search, “agua potable (insert community and state).” Saving Water in Mexico Conserving water in Mexico requires a collective effort at the individual, community, and governmental levels. Mexico’s federal government has provided federal aid to companies in some states that lower their water consumption. Different communities and municipalities manage water distribution at local levels and adjust water access accordingly. Here are some practical tips for saving water on a household level: Fix Leaks Leaks are silent water wasters, often unnoticed until they result in higher bills or water damage. Regularly check faucets, toilets, and irrigation systems for leaks and promptly repair them. Utilize the services of a plumber if needed, ensuring all fixtures and pipes are in good condition. You can check for a slow leak in the toilet by adding food coloring to the water in the tank. If the colored water appears in the toilet bowl, it means there is a leak that needs to be fixed. Install Water-Efficient Fixtures One of the easiest ways to save water at home is by upgrading to more efficient plumbing fixtures. Look for WaterSense-labeled showerheads, faucets, and toilets that use at least 20% less water than standard models. These fixtures are widely available across Mexico and can significantly cut your daily water usage. You can also seek out certified eco-friendly products endorsed by CONAGUA (National Water Commission) for reliability and effectiveness. For example, replacing an older showerhead that uses 10 liters per minute with a WaterSense model that uses only 6 liters per minute can save you over 5,000 liters of water per year, just from your daily showers. Energy-certified washing machines use about 25% less energy and 33% less water than other types of washing machines. Consider retrofitting older plumbing systems with flow restrictors and pressure regulators to optimize water pressure and minimize wastage. Consider purchasing water-saving supplies from local hardware stores and home improvement centers. If you can’t find them locally, you will find a range of online retailers specializing in eco-friendly products. You can also order energy-saving appliances and supplies from Amazon and Home Depot. See our article, A How To Guide for Online Shopping in Mexico to know more. Report Leaks Vigilance in identifying and reporting public water leaks is essential. In many cases, leaks go unnoticed for extended periods, resulting in significant water loss. Each state and sometimes community in Mexico has its entity responsible for managing water resources, making it crucial for residents to familiarize themselves with local water authorities and reporting procedures. A quick internet search including “reportar fugas de agua (insert your city and state)” will quickly give you the contact. Store Water To mitigate the impact of water scarcity, consider investing in water storage solutions like tinacos or cisterns. These containers allow households to store water for future use, providing a buffer during periods of shortage. Rotoplas water storage tanks are popular choices in Mexico, offering durable and reliable solutions for storing clean water. Monitoring water levels and scheduling refills ensures a steady supply, even during interruptions in municipal water service. Using your stored water brings you present to how much water your household actually uses as you monitor to be sure your water supply lasts as long as possible. Harvest Rainwater Take advantage of Mexico’s rainy season by implementing a rainwater harvesting system. Harnessing rainwater offers a sustainable source of water for household use. Rainwater collection systems, ranging from simple barrels to an underground cistern, capture and store rainwater for various purposes. By collecting rainwater, households can reduce reliance on municipal water supplies and conserve resources. Xeriscape Landscaping Adopt xeriscaping principles to create water-efficient landscapes that require minimal or no irrigation. Choose native plants adapted to local climate conditions, which are naturally resilient, slow-growing and drought-tolerant. Choose plants like agave, yucca, and bougainvillea that thrive in Mexico’s arid climate. You can also incorporate hardscaping elements like gravel, stone, and mulch to further minimize the need for watering. Adopt Personal Water-Efficient Practices Implement personal water-saving measures such as shortening shower time, Challenge yourself to keep showers under 5 minutes, and you could save up to 40 liters of water per person, per day. Installing a shower timer or playing a 5-minute playlist can help you stay on track. Turn off the water as you brush your teeth and use a bowl of water while shaving. This small behavior change can save you 15-20 liters per day. Be sure to run full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine. Use Greywater for Irrigation Greywater is the waste water from sinks, showers, and washing machines that can be reused for irrigation rather than going down the drain. Installing a simple greywater system allows you to divert this water to your garden, lawn, or indoor plants. Or just capturs water as the shower heats up in a bucket or other container and use it to water plants, flush toilets, or for household cleaning. You can also catch shower water to water plants and wash floors. Wash dishes in a basin in the sink and then use to water plants. Not only does this reduce your overall water usage, but it also provides nutrients for your plants. Just be sure to use biodegradable, low-sodium soaps to avoid harming your greenery. Read more: How To Make Your Vacation Property Eco-Friendly Educate and Raise Awareness One of the most important steps in reducing household water usage is raising awareness and buy-in from everyone who lives with you. Educate your family, tenants, or housemates on the importance of water conservation and your specific water-saving initiatives. Promote water conservation awareness with friends and neighbors, workplace, and community. Organize workshops, distribute educational materials, and engage in outreach activities to empower others with knowledge and practical solutions. Create conversations with neighbors about how we can save water. Advocate for sustainable water management practices and support initiatives that prioritize water conservation and protection. Putting it All Together Implementing even a few of these water-saving strategies in your Mexican home can have a significant impact. By making conservation a daily habit, you’ll not only reduce your personal water footprint but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of this vital resource for future generations. How To Guide How to Permanently Import Your Vehicle to Mexico by Brent May April 3, 2024 written by Brent May This article covers how to permanently import your vehicle to Mexico. For the sake of clarity, this article is referring to the procedures required for all of the areas south of the border areas. Special rules apply to those areas. Check your Mexican consulate for details. Provided your vehicle is 8-9 years old, you have permanent resident status in Mexico and you want to get Mexican plates for your car, you may be able to permanently import your car. Here’s how. Temporarily or Permanently Import? Which is for you? There are two ways to import your foreign-plated vehicle into Mexico. You may temporarily import your vehicle to Mexico or permanently import your vehicle to Mexico. Which of these procedures you decide to do will depend on your immigration status. If you are a permanent resident, residente permanente, you will want to either permanently import your vehicle to Mexico or buy a vehicle in Mexico. To read more about temporarily importing your vehicle, check out our article here: How to Import Your Car to Mexico. How to Permanently Import Your Vehicle to Mexico If you plan on permanently importing your car, you may import a vehicle with a capacity for up to 15 passengers. Requirements and custom duties will depend on the age, model and paperwork available for your car. Generally, the vehicle must have been manufactured in North America. You know this with the VIN. The first digit of the VIN, Vehicle Registration Number, must be somewhere between 1 and 5. 1, 4 and 5 signifies a vehicle made in the U.S., 2 in Canada and 3 in Mexico. How much does it cost to import a vehicle? You will pay an import tax depending on the age of the vehicle. For example, if the vehicle is between 8 and 9 years old, it is subject to a 10% import tax on the value, (if you can get a certificate of origin, the import tax will be 0%), you will pay 16% VAT or IVA in Spanish, 0.8% customs fee and an additional custom agent’s fee. We recommend contacting the agent well in advance to check on the requirements for your vehicle’s specifications. Who is an agente aduanal? You are required by law to hire a licensed customs agent or agente aduanal to handle this process for you. You can find an agent by searching online for “agencia aduanal importación de autos” or “agente aduanal import car Mexico.” We recommend consulting with your customs agent before starting the process. Since used cars are significantly cheaper in the U.S. than in Mexico, we might imagine that it is cost-efficient to import a used car. This may not always be the case. The customs agent can give you an estimated cost because taxes and other costs vary depending on the vehicle. Call or email them for a price quote. Ask several agencies, compare costs and response times. Then, the agent will give you the list of common paperwork you will provide for the procedure. Once you’ve gone through the process and entered Mexico with your paperwork, you can get your new plates at your Mexico destination. You may be proposed plates in the U.S. or at the border by a customs agent. Know that this is an illegal shortcut. If you’ve gotten this far, go to your destination and get your plates the proper way through el Departamento de Transporte y Vialidad. What if I’ve changed from temporary to permanent residency? If you have switched from Temporary to Permanent Resident status while in Mexico, you may not just change over your vehicle’s status. You must export the car and go through the procedure above to import it again with the proper import status. If your car is illegally in Mexico or will be once you switch from residente temporal to permanente, you can opt for a “Safe Return” procedure. You can get a “Retorno Seguro” from the SAT. This permit will give you 5 days to drive the car out of the country. It can be difficult to permanently import your car because only some cars can be imported. The customs agent will give you the current specifications of vehicles that can be imported. If your car cannot be imported, know that it is easy to buy a car in Mexico. And easy to get plates for your new car in Mexico. To find out all about How to Buy a Car in Mexico, read our article here. Know that rules and regulations can change frequently for this process. Also, regulations around buying a new car can change from one state to another. Do your homework for your geographic area. As always, patience, politeness and a smile are part of what you will need to furnish with your paperwork to make your experience successful. April 3, 2024 0 comment 0 FacebookTwitterPinterestEmail
