Visitors from all over the world are attracted by the state’s extensive gastronomic, cultural and architectural offerings. Located in the southeastern region of the country, it is 93,757 km² and is divided into 570 municipalities, making it the fifth largest state in the country. Currently, Oaxaca has three “Pueblos Mágicos” or magical towns, a national quality tourism label. Oaxaca also boasts a UNESCO declaration issued in 1987, which includes the Historic Center of Oaxaca and the Archaeological Zone of Monte Albán within the list of World Heritage Sites. Oaxaca is known mainly for its indigenous peoples made up of more than 16 ethnic groups, which have survived and continue to maintain their customs and settle around the main archaeological sites such as Monte Albán and Mitla. However, other areas showcase the more natural heritage of the state. Facing the sea and attracting more tourists every season, Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, Zicatela, Mazunte and Zipolite are the hot spots of the southern Pacific Coast. These features have inspired many architects from Mexico and around the world. They have built some of the most iconic works in the region.
