Decrees Declaring Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and Progreso, Yucatán Special Economic Zones

This brings the number of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) to five, with investments of over than 6.2 billion USD pledged to date.

President Enrique Peña Nieto today signed the Decree of Declaration of Special Economic Zones (ZEE) of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and Progreso, Yucatan, which are part of the established government commitments and of which at least 97 percent will be fulfilled by the end of his administration.

“We are advancing the fulfillment of the commitments I made to Mexicans, the pledges I signed,” which did not include “the agenda of structural reforms which is perhaps the most important thing we will have achieved in this administration”: EPN

A total of 266 commitments were made, 60 percent of which have already been met, while the remainder are being achieved.

It is projected that in the next ten or 15 years there will be an investment of approximately $36 billion dollars, equivalent to 700 billion pesos.

”This will bring development, job creation, opportunities, and above all, something very important: better paid jobs, well paid jobs, because the companies that will be installed here, taking advantage of these incentives created by the fact that they are Special Economic Zones, will create skilled jobs, or will demand skilled, experienced jobs”. EPN

The government decided to create SEZs based on a diagnosis and a reality.

It wants to promote the transformation of regions which, despite their great potential, have lagged behind the development of other parts of the country.
