At the Concours International Des Cabernets (CIDC) in France, where he competed with more than 25 countries, “Vinos Don Leo”, from the municipality of Parras de la Fuente, won the Trophy as The Best Cabernet in the World 2020 and two gold medals.

With this new award, the Cabernet Sauvignon parrense, which is smooth and refined, distinguishes the quality and exquisiteness of the Coahuila red wines, and sets the name of Mexico at the international level.

David Mendel, winegrower and owner of the winery, who 20 years ago started his project on a one-hectare plot proudly shared the triumph. “This is good news for Mexico, for Coahuila, for Parras and for Viñedos Don Leo,” he said.

The excellent results and the awards he praised to the entire work team of Don Leo, because “quality is the goal and vision of our company, and right now it is being reflected with this distinction.”

He stressed that the “Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva 2013”, aged in huge wooden barrels, won a gold medal and a trophy as the Best Cabernet in the World.

In the same joust the Cabernet Sauvignon Chiraz 2016 obtained a gold medal.

With two award-winning wines, Vinos Don Leo is consolidated as one of the best wine houses in Mexico and the world.
Parras de la Fuente “Pueblo Mágico” is a wonderful place, full of history, it is the land where Francisco I. Madero, “The Martyr of Democracy” was born.

In the Sierra de Parras, 2,100 meters above sea level, there is Viñedos Don Leo, where the cool climate prevails at night and warm to hot during the day.

The beautiful vine plantation and wine production is a business project of the Mendel family that started in 2000 on a single hectare.

Now with 60 hectares planted with vine, the bunches of grapes allow them to produce 12 varieties of table wines. Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec, Chiraz and others.

The businessman said that they manage two lines, Don Leo and Linde, Premium quality in honor of their grandparents, 97% of their production is placed on the national market and the rest is destined for international exports.
The wine house has garnered several awards nationally and internationally, but this is its first award as the Best Cabernet worldwide.

Blind tasting

He said that they sent the wines to France where, as the rules order, the best sommeliers (experts) in France “tasted blindly”.

Every year the Concours International Des Cabernets recognizes the best and most exquisite wines in the world, in 2019 Switzerland won; in 2018 Australia and in 2017 France.

Coahuila oenological wealth

Azucena Ramos Ramos, Secretary of Tourism and Development of Magical Towns of the state affirmed that the Don Leo Wine Award is a pride for Coahuilay for Mexico.

It also proves the distinguished place that this northern entity has, which is a land of dinosaur fossils, for its enological wealth as we are the cradle of wine in Latin America and worldwide.
