The Top 9 Reasons Why We Love the Yucatan

by Brent May

With something for everyone and amazing beachfront properties still to be had, the Yucatan is an incredible curated experience of Mexico. If we had to choose the top reasons of why we love the Yucatan, we'd say a laid-back beach culture, proximity to magnificent Merida and access to world-class infrastructure. Mexico is rated the Best Small City in the World and one of  the Most Livable Cities in Mexico. Read on to find out about the best things about the Yucatan!

Here are some of the reasons why we are in love with the Yucatan and its beaches.

#1. The Beaches

Where the Gulf meets the Caribbean, you can find quiet, sandy beaches for a long stroll or beaches with a more vibrant scene with restaurants and shops. It's up to you.

In any case, the water is clear blue and warm. And we love that!

#2. The Climate

The average high temperature in January is just above 87 F and the average low for that time of year is 63 F. With a tropical climate, there are nothing but sunny blue skies from November through May. June through October can see some rain. And it's that rain that nourishes the luxurious vegetation.

#3. The Ruins

Inspiring ancient Mayan ruins that constantly amaze us. Walking among 3000-year old ancient ruins never gets old. Who doesn't love feeling overwhelmed by beauty and wonder of the grandeur and skill of the ancient civilizations?

#4. Yes, the Cenotes

High on our list are the cenotes. A dream for all nature lovers, cenotes are a truly special geographical feature. Witnesses to the geological history that shaped Yucatan, cenotes are underground or open air pools of water created by the limestone rock.

No two are alike. Therefore, you will want to hit the road and find your favorite one. It might take awhile (over 6000 cenotes across the peninsula). There are popular, well-signed ones. There are special, secret ones.

#5. The Culture

Charming colonial cities and towns like Merida and Valladolid and inland towns to be discovered with their own provincial uniqueness, market towns, authentic towns with their colonial churches, town squares, weekly markets and traditional goods and foods.

#6. The Network

Are you into meeting fascinating people? We are, too. And that's also a big reason why we love this place. It attracts interesting people where community members matter to one another. With a vibrant expat community, the state of Yucatan, Merida and its surrounding towns and communities have many organizations to participate in (Rotary, Lyons, Red Cross, English Library, Alliance francaise, etc.) Other local groups focus on conservation, literacy, sustainability and culture. If you want to be social, come and participate, that's all there is to it.

#7. Healthcare

Merida boasts full-service and specialized healthcare facilities. Many doctors are certified both in Mexico and in the U.S. With the city of Merida at just over 2 million, Merida has modern hospitals with up-to-date equipment. Most doctors speak English and are familiar with expat healthcare needs. Merida also has many highly qualified dentists providing a wide range of dental services.

#8. Safety First

The state of Yucatan is the safest in the country and one of the safest cities in the world. As a matter of fact, you may be surprised to find that crime rates in the state may be lower than those in your home town. The Yucatan peninsula may have gotten a bad rap related to Cancun and money and drug problems. But again, don't confuse the Yucatan peninsula with Yucatan state.

#9. Cost of Living

Your money will go further here. Outside of the large resort towns, the beachfront communities of the Yucatan in proximity to Merida are laid-back, smaller towns. They offer an advantageous cost of living when it comes to everyday purchases, daily living and buying a home. You can live a higher quality of life for less than what it costs up north or in more populated Mexican destinations.

Yucatan state offers the very best of the peninsula in my opinion. A curated Mexican experience, the Yucatan is astounding in many ways. If you're ready to check out real-estate offerings, we can help you navigate the purchasing process so you can Own Mexico!
